Exploring Modern Art with Kids

Art appreciation and art history are such rich subjects to study with kids... but finding the time to put together lesson plans can be tricky.

There are a lot of fun ideas on the internet, but sometimes they miss the point of the art. You can also find plenty of lesson plans that are full of information, but it may not be written in a way that engages kids and allows them to explore the art in an open-ended and process-based way.

Exploring modern art with kids! Learn about Vincent van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Piet Mondrian, Georgia O'Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and more!

I've gathered together a few of the amazing artists who contributed to different movements in Modern Art, and created fun, kid-friendly lesson plans for each of them!

Check out these kid-friendly and open-ended guides!

This week only, they are all on sale for 25% off.

They are amazing – not only for their rich content, but because they are designed to be adaptable.

  • Families with kids of different ages can do the same project, but at a different level to support each child depending on their interest in art, and where they are now in their artistic development.
  • You can do all of the projects with only crayons and construction paper. Sometimes it says to paint, or use chalk pastels, or something else... but you can adapt it to work with what you have on hand, or what art materials your child likes to use.
  • Messy art is fun (and good for kids), but if you don't have time for clean up, or if your child is adverse to messy projects, just use crayons! Crayons are great... and they are the perfect art supply for a multitude of activities.
  • All of the guides come with an outline that you can follow for a 2 week plan, a 4 week plan, or a 6 week plan. These are only suggestion, though! You can do a 2 day plan or a 3 month plan if that works better for you.
  • Kids who love art will LOVE the open ended nature of the art activities. They will be directed to think about certain things, and use ideas from the art they are studying, but ultimately their art is THEIRS. They make the choices, and they use their own creativity. (There are no instructions or step by step plans to make art the "right" way. All of the projects are guided by each child's individual thoughts and choices.)

Adaptability lets you customize your education...

..because you are involved in shaping your experience, but without all of the work that comes with planning the lessons on your own.

Your kids can meet all 9 masters of modern art and explore their own creativity as they discover some fascinating and fun facts about art history in the process.

And, they can do it in a way that makes sense for them – art is not a "one size fits all" activity. Giving kids a foundation in art appreciation isn't about memorizing dates and places and people. It's about nurturing curiosity, inspiring them to explore their own imaginations, and create art that is meaningful to them.

If you've been looking for a way to add more art into your child's school year, but you don't know where to start, or how to approach art... this is for you! It's a complete guided tour through Modern Art – written just for kids!

I am absolutely obsessed with your site and curriculum sets. The kids and I love, love, love them. They are some of the best that I have seen offered to homeschooling parents in particular. I love your community and I am just obsessed! (In a good way.)
