Louise Nevelson for Kids!
She was originally from Russia, but her family moved to the United States when she was six years old. When she was a little girl, she loved to play with the wood scraps in her father’s lumberyard. This playful experimentation was the foundation for her eventual career as a sculptor.
Louise’s sculptures aren’t made in the traditional classical way, with a chisel and a slab of marble. She would collect interesting objects that other people had discarded, arrange them together, and paint them all black!
Her work is large in scale, and it’s often placed outside in public spaces, but you can also see her pieces in art museums around the world.
Invite your kids to create their own found art sculptures inspired by Louise Nevelson’s work, and read more about her (and 49 other amazing women artists) in this new book!
